Beyond the Headlines: Critical Thinking and Digital Advocacy

The second training under our Erasmus+ accreditation, **Beyond the Headlines**, was a natural continuation of “Think Twice” — but with an even deeper focus on **digital responsibility, critical thinking, and online activism**.

Over the course of seven days, participants once again gathered in Pernik to explore how narratives are created and deconstructed in the digital environment — from viral videos and memes to political campaigns. The program included **hands-on labs, simulations, and exercises that placed participants in the roles of analysts, creators, and active citizens**.

One of the most impactful sessions was **“Echo Chambers”** — a simulation in which the group was divided into separate “information bubbles.” Each “bubble” received different versions of the same news story and had to defend it in a debate. After the discussion, participants realized how quickly and subtly polarization and isolation can emerge.

Another key part of the program was the **“Digital Detox Challenge”** — a 24-hour exercise without phones or social media, during which participants were tasked with creating an offline campaign for positive online behavior. This activity sparked deep conversations about habits, dependencies, and personal responsibility in the digital world.

The format also included a **counter-narrative creation workshop**, where participants used visual and textual tools to rewrite manipulative messages and transform them into positive campaigns. These exercises led to the development of five real digital initiatives, which were later further developed in the participants’ home countries.

During the training, an **incident involving discrimination and aggression from an external group** significantly affected the atmosphere. Thanks to the team’s quick response and the follow-up support sessions, participants were able to transform this difficult moment into a powerful lesson in solidarity, understanding, and civic courage. The program was adapted and fully dedicated to themes of discrimination, hate speech, and social inclusion.

At the end of the training, a **“Digital Advocacy Handbook”** was created — a collective resource compiling the developed campaigns, methods, and ideas. It serves as a practical and inspiring tool for youth workers, schools, and organizations addressing critical thinking and digital culture.

“Beyond the Headlines” showed that sometimes the most important lessons come from unexpected situations — when theory meets reality. The project not only trained participants but **built a community of aware young people who are capable of standing up for their values and acting responsibly in the digital world**.
